The net play has a huge number of variations and there are no limit or any particular way to play the net! However i believe these are some of the fundamental techniques at the front of the court everyone should at least know before exploring other options.
1) The net play is very crucial in controlling the opponent around the court, it gives you many chance to attack, it could also very well destroy your opponent’s momentum with deception.
2) The net play is also place where you can display creativity and come up with new moves never seen before! But before you do that, let me introduce some of the basic moves before we all become ambitions alright?

Clear Shot/ Net Lift
|
The lift is when you hit the ball high above your opponent into the base court. This is a slow shot that gives you more time to recover(if you lost your balance) and prepare for the next shot.
Also, a good lift is hard to attack because 1) The opponent is very far back at their court (More Distance from net, higher difficulty) 2) The ball travels head vertically down and not at a 45° (Harder to Hit downwards) 3) They are afraid they may not be able to follow-up (Eg. If you hit a net shot if they drop) |
The Net and Cross-Net Shot
|
The net shot, is a short that just crosses the net and falls sharply downwards. This means that your opponent has to come forward because the shot is near the net.
A good net shot makes it very difficult for your opponent to reach and hit due to restrictions of the net (Much like a short person trying to throw a ball over a really tall person block you) Additionally, there is also the cross-net shot, that means apart from hitting it just over the net, you also hit it from across from left to right( or right to left). If used properly it can serve as another threat as your opponent has to guard both corners at the front, Here is a video demonstrating both the net and the cross-net. Although sadly there is no translation, as a beginner, take note of the following 1) Take the shuttle high, it makes it a lot easier 2) Use mostly wrist and finger power, not the entire forearm(nor arm) 3) Coordination of hand and footwork (The timing is the same) |
Net Kill
|
The Net kill, known as tapping in my country(Singapore) is hard shot aim downwards in hopes of ending the rally. The net kill is only possible if you are able to hit the shuttle above the net.
Here is a clip demonstrating the net kill |
Flick Shot
The flick is a faster, more deceptive version of the lift. The power from the flick comes the wrist and not from the forearm nor the shoulders unlike the lift, making the swing very small.
Naturally this means you would need a good amount of strength and accuracy before the flick becomes effective. Here is a video to show the difference between the lift and the flick!

Usually the flick shot passes the opponent’s swinging range just by a little, therefore they can’t intercept it and have to move back. For example, the cross flick has to be a little high so that it passes your opponent’s reach. Where else when you do a nice straight flick, it can pass your opponent’s reach sideways(assuming they stand in the middle unprepared for it), hence it can be much flatter and faster! |
