2 Types of Lob Shot
Yes in this page I'm going to share with you about 2 types of lob shot, the conventional clear and the attacking lob, what are their uses and of course, disadvantages as well.
Lobbing is a stroke executed at your baseline, hitting the ball far to the back of your opponent court. Any good lob should be over your opponent's reach at mid court, hence pushing them to the back of the baseline.

Defensive Lob Shot
This is what most beginners are taught and would do, do a very high lob to simply just push the opponent back
Uses
- To slow down the game
- Gives you time to recover if you're out of position
- Break your opponents timing
- Longer time to get ready
- Makes your opponent gets frustrated in attacking ( Provided they keep failing to score after many attempts to attack)
Disadvantages
- Opponent is not under pressure (They can slowly return to baseline and still be in a comfortable position to hit)
- Your opponent have a lot of time to get into stance eg a high jumping smash (Deadly of your opponent is powerful)
- Gives up your ‘Attacking’ position if you were attacking.

Attacking Lob Shot
Next is the attacking lob, this is also a lob that goes over your opponent’s reach, but the difference is that it’s very offensive because it’s very flat, meaning you try to make it go over your opponent’s reach as little as possible.
So your opponent has to move back, but yet is highly pressurized by the speed of the shuttle.
And how this is achieved is usually lobbing at the corners when your opponent is not expecting it, hence they’ll not be able to intercept and face a dangerous flat lobbing.
Uses
- Puts your opponent under pressure
- A form of attack so you do not break your attacking game
- Catches your opponent off guard
- Let your opponent have little time prepare ( eg. They can’t do a jumping smash)
Disadvantages
- Very dangerous if intercepted by your opponent mid-court
- Gives you less time to get ready for the next shot as well
- Easier to hit outside
